Jonny Smith and the rest of the Holbox Kite School staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and safety conscious. The communication was excellent. The shop is clean and inviting. Gear by Slingshot and Ride Engine are top notch and what I would consider buying for my own equipment. The spot for learning is beautiful, shallow, flat water with a sandy bottom. I was able to progress in a short time after a long hiatus from kitesurfing. Would definitely recommend and I plan to be back.

Learning to kite with Johnny was an incredible experience. After several attempts elsewhere, I finally achieved my goal of becoming an independent kiter thanks to his patient, structured, and encouraging teaching style. Johnny has a rare ability to combine technical expertise with clear, step-by-step instruction. He always made sure I understood the “why” behind every move, from safety procedures and equipment setup to body dragging, water starts, and riding upwind. His calm presence on the water built my confidence and helped me progress faster than I ever expected. Holbox was the perfect spot to learn — shallow water, steady wind, and a relaxed vibe — but it was really Johnny who made the difference. He’s passionate about kiting, genuinely cares about his students, and knows exactly how to adapt his approach to each learner. I’m now confidently riding on my own, fully independent, and can’t thank him enough. I highly recommend Johnny to anyone serious about learning kitesurfing the right way!

Jonny was fantastic in getting me back up and running having not kited in a while. I felt very safe the whole time and his instructions were on point and very clear. He’s also a great bloke to have around.

Johnny from Holbox kiteboarding school was a great teacher! Not only he explained us the technique and gave us tips on how to improve, but also gave us general advise on how to deal with certain types of situations if they arise (pay attention to other boats, what to do if the leash breaks, etc). Besides he did this with good vibes, recommend!

the instructor who assisted me, Jonny, in addition to giving me the instructions so I could end the course riding and flying, he gave me a lot of security instructions and tips that gave me confidence to continue the training alone. We did a lot of different exercises, tried different situations and talked a lot about the theory and the equipment that I could feel my level got better. I really recommend this school!! My friends and I came to Holbox to learn kitesurfing with Johnny and his team. They were true professionals, friendly and generally great. Id recommend this school for beginners and advanced surfers as well

Jonny was the best coach I could have possibly hoped for. I went from using a kite for the very first time to riding upwind consistently after 9 hours of instruction over a few days. I feel confident I could go out on my own, rig a kite, and ride well even in strong weather. I could tell that Jonny’s goal wasn’t just to get me up and riding as quickly as possible, he was setting a foundation for my future as a kiteboarder to make sure I could kite with my safety and others in mind. I can’t wait to get home and take the next steps to continue progressing!

I learnt to wing foil with Jonny. Good instructions, clearly explained, and also gave me time to figure out and learn at my own pace. It definitely helped to spread the learning over a few days, to build my skills and have chance to try different conditions. I really enjoyed trying something new, and have fallen in love with a new sport. Thanks to the useful hints, tips and patience of a good coach, l could really get the most fun and time on the water.
