FAQ

When are my students or clients insured?

They are insured as soon as they enroll in any of the IKO Kiter Membership Plan

Am I covered by insurance if I break someone's kite/board?

Yes, you are covered for material damage, subject to an excess of 250 Euros. If a third party files a claim against you for compensation, contact IKO Support to assist you with your claim.

Can I cumulate/add together compensation from both the recreational third party liability insurance and personal accident insurance?

No, the third-party insurance is to compensate others. The personal accident policy applies to yourself.

What if I break my leg while kitesurfing or while working?

Medical expenses are not covered under this insurance. You should use your health insurance if you have any. However, if your injury results in permanent partial or total disability as listed in the policy, you may file a claim for compensation.

What do I do if I have an accident with another person and they need to go to hospital?

If you are responsible for an accident involving a third party, then you must submit a claim so the insurance company can reimburse the other person.

Does the professional third party liability insurance cover me in case of third party property damage and/or injury, or requires hospitalization, just in case someone gets hurt during my lesson?

Yes, contact the IKO support in this case to assist you with your claim.

Will I be covered by insurance if I am competing in a competition?

Yes, if your membership is valid, you are covered during competitions. The competition must be recognized by a local, national, or international organization.

What is the maximum/minimum age limit for the recreational insurance policy?

Minimum age is 12 years old and maximum age is 65 years old.

I´m abroad, and require medical attention. What should I do?

There is no coverage for medical expenses. You should use your health insurance if you have it.

Can I get a refund if I change my mind about the policy and want to cancel?

The IKO will not provide a refund for any online service such as membership, eCourses or eBooks.

If I suffer an injury as a result of kiteboarding, which means I can't work or earn money for a period of time. Will I get compensated for loss of earnings?

No, there is no loss of earnings compensation available.

I’m an IKO Instructor working independently or for a non-IKO school. Am I covered?

Not yet. Professional liability insurance is only valid when teaching within an official IKO Center.

To get covered, simply join or create an IKO Center (available from Level 2). Once affiliated, your Plus or Premium membership activates your professional liability coverage—so you can teach with confidence.

I only work a few months a year and the fee feels a bit high. I don’t want to lose my IKO Instructor status—what can I do?

You can choose the Basic Instructor Membership for just USD 79.90 per year. It allows you to keep your IKO certification active while benefiting from recreational third-party liability insurance and full access to IKO services.

Please note: this plan does not include professional liability coverage for teaching, so your students are not covered during your lessons.

What would happen if a medical center does not accept the insurance?

You or the third party would pay upfront and keep the bills and any paperwork. The claim would then be submitted to the insurance company for reimbursement.

If I am involved in an incident, who should I contact, the IKO or AXA?

You must contact the IKO Support Department, who will assist in the claim procedure.

Is there any IKO third party liability insurance available for my kiteboarding school?

No, IKO insurance is not available for kiteboarding schools. However, if all your students apply individually for the recreational third party liability insurance, and the whole school team including Assistants, Instructors and Trainers applies individually for the professional third party liability insurance, then lessons and courses delivered at your kiteboarding school will be covered as soon as your school becomes an IKO Affiliated Center. If these conditions are met, the IKO no longer requires your school to have a separate insurance certificate.

Is there an Instructor membership without insurance?

No, all membership plans include at least one type of insurance.

Does renewing my membership automatically include insurance?

Yes. All membership renewals include insurance. Simply choose the membership plan that matches the type of coverage you need, and your insurance will be included accordingly.

How long is the insurance valid for?

Your insurance becomes active as soon as your IKO membership is paid and is valid for one year.

For Pro Courses, coverage starts on the first day of the course and remains valid for one year from that date.

With the professional third party liability insurance: are my students covered if they injured and/or damage other people or their property?

If the injury/damage to the third party caused by the student is because of your mistake as an instructor, then the student is covered. If the incident to the third party is caused by the student’s mistake, because they did not respect your instructions or safety rules, for example, then the student is liable. They may be covered by the recreational third party liability insurance if they have it.

Is my insurance valid worldwide, or are there geographical limits?

Your insurance is generally valid worldwide, including certain countries such as Colombia, Peru, Cuba, and Venezuela, subject to specific conditions and exclusions.

However, coverage does not apply in certain high-risk or restricted countries or regions, and it is also excluded where activities violate international sanctions.

  • For the full list of excluded countries and detailed conditions, please refer to Article 4 – Geographical Limits of your policy.
What is the difference between third-party liability and personal accident insurance?
  • Third-party liability insurance protects you if you are held responsible for causing injury or damage to others.
  • Personal accident insurance provides compensation to you (or your designated beneficiary) in case of disability, rescue, or death resulting from your kitesurfing activities—whether recreational or professional.

Please note: personal accident insurance does not cover medical expenses.

As an Assistant or Instructor, what does professional liability insurance cover?

The professional liability insurance covers you when you ride on your own and while you work based on your qualifications and as long as you respect the IKO Standards.
